A UNESCO
Fellow in Journalism in 1958. A member of the Administrative Council of the
International Centre for Higher Education in Journalism in Strasbourg in
1960-1974.




Since 1975
actively participated in the communication debate in the UNESCO as a member of
the Soviet delegation and in a personal capacity.Closely cooperated with the
McBride International Commission on Communication at the UNESCO as a consultant
and an adviser in 1978-1979 up to the publication of the McBride report “Many
voices – one world”. After the establishment of the International Program for
the Development of Communication attended its sessions as a Member of the
Soviet delegation.




In 1989
participated in London European Information Forum.




A member of
the International Association for Media and Communication research,
Vice-President in 1972-1988, Chairperson of the Working Group on Media in
Post-Socialist and Post-Totalitarian societies.




In
1995-1999 was Chairman of the Russian Commission on Broadcasting, charged with
licensing television and radio frequencies.




He was
awarded with the Order of the
Badge of Honor (1960, 1976), the Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1980), the
Order of Merit for the Fatherland IV class (1999), The Order of Friendship
(2005), UNESCO Mahatma
Gandhi Golden Medal and Russian Independent Prize Triumph by the Independent
Fond Triumph (2006).


His main
research interests are theory and history of mass communications and media,
American studies, history of American literature, transitional media models and
comparative studies of Russian and American media systems, media image of the
country, Information Society and the media, mobile communication and society,
information technologies and globalization
