UNESCO Chair on Media Freedom, Journalism Safety and the Issue of Impunity

Description and Mandate of the Chair

The UNESCO Chair is situated within the Centre for Freedom of the Media at the University of Sheffield. It works to build research capacity and networks, facilitate knowledge exchange around and raise awareness about the issues of media freedom, journalism safety, and the problem of impunity for crimes against journalists at the local, national, regional and international levels. This work is undertaken with a view to strengthen and develop links between the activities of academic and higher education institutions, development bodies, civil society organisations, UN agencies, media organisations and journalists. As part of this work the Chair works to develop and grow the Journalism Safety Research Network which is a global network of academic and non-academic researchers.
