Water resources fuel prosperity by meeting basic human needs, contributing to maintaining health, livelihoods, and economic development, strengthening food and energy security, and preserving environmental integrity. These resources influence the economy in many ways, and global trade dynamics and market adjustments can directly affect how regional and local economies utilize water. Similarly, the impacts of conflicts on water resources are numerous and often indirect, such as those related to forced migration and increased exposure to health risks. Climate change, geopolitical unrest, pandemics, mass migrations, hyperinflation, and other crises can exacerbate inequalities in water access. Generally, the poorest and most vulnerable groups are those whose well-being is most at risk. The 2024 edition of the United Nations World Water Development Report outlines the complex interdependencies between sustainable water management, peace, and prosperity. It explains how progress in one of these areas often has crucial positive impacts on the other two.
